Stone polishing methods:

Stone polishing methods are many. Each one used for different types of stone flooring. There is a possibility that a type of stone may need more than one method. The following are a few methods of our company

  • Polishing powders and compounds: These are fine grains of aluminum or tin oxide abrasive powder that are buffed or rubbed on the surface of the stone to create the reflective shine. The process is similar to that with diamonds, however; the powder is a lot more abrasive.
  • Grinding with diamond abrasives is another method to that is done by grinding the surface of the stone with various grits of industrial diamonds. The process is repeated with finer grits of diamonds until a shine is produced.
  • Waxing or coating is used to cover the surface to create an artificial shine. A liquid which is like wax, acrylic, urethane or any other polymer is applied on the surface as a coating. Some are left and the others are buffed to give a stronger shine. This process is not done for porous stone.
  • Crystallization is another process in which a chemical called fluorosilicate is sprayed on the stone and buffed with steel wool pads causing new glassy crystals to be formed on the surface.

Stone polishing at home:

Professional stone polishing is recommended every few months to ensure the new look of the stone remains, however, there are methods, measures and ways to maintain and polish your stone floor at home so that it remains more durable.

  • Stone polishingUsing sealers on your stone floor prevents water or other liquids to penetrate through the floor. This gives you enough time to quickly remove the stain before it becomes permanent
  • Home polishes that are generally recommended by professional stone treatment companies. This brings out the color of the stone. However, it wears off soon and doing it regularly may ruin it
  • Stone gets stained easily, so it is important to clean any spill, even if it’s just of water as soon as possible.
  • Use soft sponge or cloth to clean and avoid scrubbing harshly
  • Use coasters and mats to avoid direct contact of dishes with the stone
  • Dust and mop your stone regularly
  • Use rugs, doormats, runners and everything to prevent direct contact
  • Never use regular store bought products. They can be harsh to the stone
  • Never use vinegar, lemon or other acidic products, they ruin the stone
  • Never drag heavy furniture or sharp objects on the floor
